Anything that gets more girls on the hill has my vote! I caught up with Meghan Kelly from the Kirkwood Freeride Team to find out about SheJumps – a non-profit organization that promotes female participation in all kinds of outdoor activities including skiing and riding.
This year, they’ll be holding national “Get the Girls Out” days at Kirkwood Mountain Resort, meeting at 1:30 pm at Chair 6, the 2nd Sunday of every month – a great opportunity to get together with like-minded women, progress, and have some fun on the hill!
What is SheJumps?
SheJumps is a non-profit that strives to increase female participation in outdoor activities by building upon a supportive community that inspires its members to reach their highest potential. Whether you want to ski the backcountry for the first time or throw a back flip off a 30 foot cliff, SheJumps wants to connect you with other women who can show you the way or encourage and support you!
How did you become involved?
I first became involved in SheJumps when I went to a “jump camp” in 2010 in Park City, UT - there I met up with 12 other women to hurl myself into a pool off the water ramps at the Olympic Training Center. I loved the experience, the camaraderie, and the “if she can do it, then I can too” attitude that seemed to develop. So in 2011, when SheJumps was looking for someone to fill the role of the Northern California Director, I stepped up, with backing from many of the SheJumps people I had met along the way.
What kind of events do you have?
So far in Tahoe, we’ve had women’s ski and mountain bike days, climbing nights, a day at Woodward at Tahoe, and an all women’s ski tuning clinic.
What are “Get the Girls Out” days?
This year, we’re looking to have our national “Get the Girls Out” days at Kirkwood Mountain Resort, meeting at 1:30 pm at Chair 6, the 2nd Sunday of every month! Join us! With female support, maybe you’ll finally ski that black diamond or stomp that cliff you’ve been eying up. Either way, it is guaranteed to be a good time!
Other dates: February 10th, March 10th.
See you on the hill ladies!
